Bird Safety Tips

Household pets are susceptible to a multitude of dangers lying around the house and even some in their own bird cage. Like all other pets, pet birds are bird safety, toy safety, large bird toyalso subject to a number of risks. This is mainly due to their small size, sensitive respiratory system, fast metabolism and in the case of parrots, their curiosity to explore everything around them with their beaks.

Owners are responsible for their pets safety and should take the necessary precautions to prevent any accidents. Here is a list of the top dangers faced by household pet birds. Starting with the most obvious, birds have a special dietary need and cannot digest most food processed by other pets and humans. High sugar or salt concentrations are inappropriate.

Fatty foods are also discouraged. Chocolate is to be avoided at all costs as it is toxic not only to birds but also to other pets in general. Water is the preferred beverage choice. Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks are very dangerous!

Because of their sensitive respiratory system, birds are extremely sensitive to poisons and toxins. Some dangerous contaminants from cleaners, industrial fumes, and pesticides are fatal for birds. Strong and aromatic odours can also kill birds. Aerosol body sprays, Nail polish, cigarette smoke, and paint fumes are to be avoided. If, as typical, one dedicates a special spot for his bird cages inside his car garage, he should take care not to start his car inside the garage as carbon monoxide can lead to respiratory diseases.

One should make special mentioning of non-stick coatings, which emit particular fumes that are toxic to birds when overheated. These coats are usually found on non-stick cookware, irons, space heaters, blow dryers and more. As many birds chew on many things small enough for their beaks, one must place safer bird toys, which are made from sanitised and toxin-free plastics or woods like eucalyptus and manzanita in order to avoid poisoning from ingesting or biting the toys.

Birds, which are left, to roam around the house are also at a risk of falling into sources of open water such as in toilets, sinks, buckets and water bowls. Even worse, they can fall into hot pots of water sitting on stoves in the kitchen, so it is generally preferred not to let birds out of their bird cages in kitchens. Ceiling fans pose a major threat to flying birds and have been the cause of several serious injuries and fatalities.

<!–wsa:birdt–>

Birds tend to get very agitated and nervous with moving things above them and may become stressed out of a ceiling fan running close to their bird cage. Other electrical appliances, which might not pose a direct threat to a bird, might have an exposed electrical cord. As most birds explore with their beaks, electrical cords can pose a danger if bitten. Cords should be concealed as much as possible using corrugated plastic tubing for example.

Even bird toys specifically designed for parrots and other birds may not be totally safe. Apart from being made out of toxic materials, toys can be broken down by bigger parrots and parts swallowed. Remember that even if a particular toy looks pretty durable at the time of purchase, bird toys don’t last forever and should be checked from time to time.

Rope toys can also cause birds to get tangled up in them and get strangled as a result. Finally, birds are rarely known for social interaction with many other pets and birds, especially cats. They can attract the predatory instinct of other animals and if attacked, any bites or scratches can become fatal to a bird. Therefore, cats or dogs around the house can be a risk to pet birds even if they are in their bird cage.

Bird Cage Toys Bird Supplies

If you have a pet bird or plan on getting one in the future, you will need to get bird toys as well. Bird toys are essential to the health and well being of your bird cage toys, bird toys, pet toys bird. Bird toys provide mental stimulation to your bird to prevent boredom, and help to provide habits that your bird would naturally act upon in the wild. It can be a daunting task however, to try and choose bird toys for your bird, because there are so many to choose from.

When you go to find toys for your bird, you need to find a toy that is the correct size for your bird. If you choose a bird toy that is too small for your bird, it can pose a choking hazard. If you choose one that is too large, your bird may not play with it and large pieces can actually scare them.

Most pet stores that sell bird toys will have the toys separated into sections based on the size of your bird. If you own a large bird, such as a Macaw or African Grey, you will need to choose bird toys with large pieces. The toy should have large blocks of wood and large beads or other pieces on it that your bird can chew on without risk of swallowing a piece. Since birds are notorious for climbing and hanging on their toys, toys for large birds should have thick, sturdy ropes and strong clasps to attach them to the cage with. This way, if the bird does choose to try and hang from it, the toy is strong and sturdy and will not risk breaking causing possible harm to your bird.

If you have small birds, such as cockatiels, parakeets, budgies or conures, you will probably have a much larger selection of toys to choose from since these are much more common birds as pets. Toys for these birds should be made of pieces that are relative to their size. They should not be to large, because they can scare the birds or even injure the birds if they are too big. While some large parrot toys may be alright for your smaller birds, you should generally avoid them, and stick with toys that are specifically made for small birds. Many people unknowingly believe that their small birds will love having a bigger toy and that it will last longer, however they really are not the best choice for little birds.

The good news for you is that bird toys come in a large number of shapes and sizes. Many online pet stores offer an extremely large selection of bird toys for your bird. Keep in mind however, that birds do have a personality of their own and while you may think a toy is nice your bird may not. Buying a variety of bird toys will give your bird a large selection of toys to choose from and also give a selection to use to rotate toys to prevent your bird from getting bored.

Pet Hair Remover

Pet Hair Remover

Owning a pet can be a wonderful experience in many ways, but one of the downsides can be having a home filled with pet dander or hair. Many people are allergic to fur, or have allergies that the pet dander can aggravate. Your pet hair, pet hair removerpet cant help it, they shed, and its your job as their owner to remove the pet hair from your home. Here is a handy guide to what you will need to combat pet dander in your home. These methods are quick and inexpensive and can be implemented by any pet owner!

Step One

Learn how to use a vacuum! You need to vacuum your house weekly. If you do not, dander or hair may sink into carpets or furniture and become impacted. Then it becomes much more difficult to remove the dander completely. You need to focus mostly on your carpets. You can use a lint roller in highly trafficked places to remove hair even more completely. Then, you can use ordinary dryer sheets on your furniture. By rubbing your furniture with the dryer sheets you cannot only repel hair from sticking to the furniture, but can also leave your furniture smelling fresh. No pet odor here!

Step Two

Filters are your friend! They can help trap dust, dirt and pet hair that wander around the air in your apartment. If you change your air filter once a month or so, you will only be out about 2 bucks a month, but the air in your apartment will be free of dander. Your equipment will be functioning at a high level when clean, and the airborne particles will not be circulating their way around your home. You can also vacuum vents around your house to remove hair that could be stuck to the outside of the vents.

Step Three

Wash those linens! By washing all of your sheets, pillows, and blankets regularly you can not only remove the dander that may accumulate (especially if your pet sleeps in your bed,) but you can keep a parasite problem at bay. Fleas and bedbugs will not survive weekly washing; that is for sure! Make sure to use a strong detergent and drier sheets to even more fully remove the pet hair from your linens. Make sure to empty your dryer lint traps. More pet hair in your laundry will mean that the washer and drier will be working overtime. Keep up the maintenance for the washer and drier, and they will be an important tool in helping keep pet hair at bay in your home.

Step Four

Brush those pets! You should groom your pets as often as possible. You will remove any loose hair hanging around on your puppy or kitten, which will lead to less hair being left around your house. Use a good brush and groom them 2-3 times a week for best results. You can also wipe your pet down with some pet wipes to remove any other hair that may be clinging to them.

Decorative Bird Cages: Enliven Your Environment

Decorative bird cage items more or less have the same function as those ugly metal bird cages.

Decorative Bird CagesThe distinction is obviously, you guessed it, they are much prettier and can blend in with the home environment where you place the cage.

Depending on the look and feel of your interior design, these decorative cages can add a nice supplement to the surrounding wall photos of family members, near your unorthodox plants, or even as the main attraction of one of your rooms at home or at the office.

Here are the general flavors of bird cages before we even get into the topic of decorative cages. You can find bird cages made from a range of distinct materials (which all come into consideration in your over-arching layout) such as iron, metal, steel, acrylic, wood, and a host of other resources including unorthodox ones like bamboo.

Bird cages of the decorative variety are like T-Shirts, they come in all sorts of designs! In fact you can even personalize the look and feel of your bird cage if that tickles your fancy! Like individuals, bird cages have a culture all their own, with diverse architectural feels ranging from Arabic, Chinese, to French inspired styles and more.

Whether you are looking for something intricate perhaps from the Renaissance era, or if you want a bird cage shaped after your favorite uncle’s head, there is bound to be something that is right for you, and if not you can customize it!

One very fundamental consideration is to take into account the bird’s comfort levels with the decorative bird cage you purchase. Do not pass up on issues such as ample space, and safety for your bird, because he or she is ultimately the one who will be spending the most time in it! Be nice to your bird!

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are birds in the family Trochilidae, and are native to the Americas.

Hummingbirds feed on the nectar of plants and are important Hummingbirds, bird parrots, training parrotspollinators, especially of deep-throated, tubular flowers.

Hummingbirds are continuously hours away from starving to death, and are able to store just enough energy to survive overnight.

They are also capable of slowing down their metabolism at night, or any other time food is not readily available.

Throated Hummingbirds

Their heart rate can reach as high as 1,260 beats per minute, a rate once measured in a Blue-throated Hummingbird. The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is 7-9 cm long with an 8-11 cm wingspan, and weighs about 3 g. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is migratory, spending most of the winter in southern Mexico, Central America as far south as South America, and the West Indies. The only species found in the NE United States is the ruby-throated hummingbird, Archilochus colubris. A close relative to the Ruby-throated, the Black-chinned Hummingbird, is the most widespread and common species in Canada and the western United States.

Hummingbirds are found only in the Americas, from southern Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, including the Caribbean. Hummingbirds include the smallest birds in the world but they belong to one of the largest families of birds. Hummingbirds are called nectivores because about 90 percent of their diet is nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds like flowers that are bright and that open during the day, when hummingbirds are awake. Hummingbirds come in all colors of the rainbow. Hummingbirds vary in size from a 2 1-4-in. Hummingbirds are also very helpful in pollinating the plants on which they feed.

Bird Cage Covers

If you own a pet bird you may already know the importance of having a bird cage cover. Putting a cage cover over your bird is a sign that it’s time for bed. It lets them know to be quiet for the night and it helps in keeping them on a Bird Cage Covers, parrot cage coversset schedule. Another good thing about a bird cage cover is how it will also keep them from singing away at 4:30 in the morning. Birds tend to wake up a little earlier than I do.

There are some important points to keep in mind when using bird cage cover:

- While you can put something like a pillow case over your bird cage, you would be better off getting a cage cover that is made for your cage.

- Don’t use a bird cage cover to punish your favorite parrot or cockatiel. Doing so can actually lead to its in effectiveness at night.

- Use the cage cover at the same time each night if at all possible. It may come as a surprise to some, but birds need a schedule just like we do in order to lead a happy, healthy life.

You can find bird cage covers in many pet supply stores as well as on the internet. Prices will depend on the size of your bird cage as well as the type of material used.

Another option is to make your own custom cage cover for your bird. You could pick out a material that matches the decor in your home to give it a nicer touch. Just be sure to get a fabric that is washable.

As you can see, adding a bird cage cover is important for your bird. And hopefully these tips can help give you some great ideas for your own cage.

Pet Bird Care Advice

Birds are kind of like children. They love their toys and they love to play. But just as a responsible parent would practice good safety measures with their children and their toys, a bird owner also needs to practice good safety measures with their pet as well.

Pet Bird Care,safe parrot toys

The first step to proper bird safety comes with buying the actual bird toy itself. Though it shouldn’t be this way, many bird toy manufacturers make toys that are actually quite unsafe for birds. Ideally, these toys would never be allowed on the market, but unfortunately that isn’t the way it is. So when you go to purchase new bird toys, you need to make sure that they are safe toys that will not be harmful to your bird.

Bird toys should be made with safe materials. While there are some bird toys made from plastics that are quite safe, you should still thoroughly examine

small bird toys,

these toys before you purchase them. Plastic ingestion can be very harmful to birds. Before you buy the toy, make sure it does not have cracks in it that will easily split. Avoid buying the toy if the plastic looks brittle or damaged. These toys may easily break, and the bird could end up swallowing the plastic and getting sick.Pet Bird Care, bird cage cover

If you are buying toys that are made with wood, make sure the wood is a type that is safe for birds to chew on. Some woods are toxic to birds and can make them ill or even be lethal. Before you purchase a wood toy, make sure you know what type of wood that it is made from so you can ensure it has been manufactured from a wood that is safe for birds.

You should avoid buying toys with small chains to them, as bird claws and nails can get tangled in these chains and cause injury. Instead, look for toys that are hung with rope. When looking for toys with rope, make sure the the rope is a cotton rope with a tight weave to it. Do not buy toys that have loose weaves, or look like they may come apart easily, because this can also cause the bird to become entwined in the toy.

Proper bird toy safety continues after the purchase of the parrot toys too. The second step to proper bird toy safety is to be mindful of the toys after you have given them to the bird. When the toys start to become worn and are breaking apart very easily, take them out of the cage and throw them away. If there are rope toys in the cage, snip loose ends of the rope as you see them or throw the toy away all together if it is getting very loose.

Following these few simple bird toy safety tips will not only keep your bird healthy, but will also show it how much you care for it. When you are mindful of your birds toy safety, you can rest assured they will live a long and healthy life with you.

Bird Cage Cleaning Bird Cage Sanitation

Bird Cage Cleaning bird cage cleaning, clean bird cage

Bird Toy supplies is dedicated to the health of your pet bird.

Before setting the bird into its ‘ lodging ‘ you should do something else, never the less that the bird cage is new , and the perches are ecologically clean , they should be disinfected carefully . I call this operation ‘carbonation ‘, because as a ‘disinfectant’ gas for burning is used , and gas for cigarette lighters can be used but it can be quite expensive .

How to proceed :

Wash both the bird cage and the wooden sticks with soap and hot water.

Leave them dry well especially the sticks because they soak with water and drench.

Prepare the gas and a cloth with which to put the gas over the perches and the bird cage. It is compulsory to put gloves ( surgery or household for washing plates ), otherwise you hands will smell awful.

Slightly damp the cloth , but not to drop gas from it , and carefully rub the bird cage everywhere and the perches . Now the bird cage and the perches are absolutely ready to be completed and to put the bird inside .

The disinfection is very useful for the bird because when it steps on the ‘ carbonated ‘ perches , a part of the gas gets soaked into its legs and then when scouring themselves it goes on its feathers.

It is good at least once or twice to clean the perches with gas and to change them. That is why I told you in the beginning to provide yourselves with wooden sticks .

To clean the bird cage with gas is more difficult , because you are supposed to have a spare ‘ lodging ‘ for the bird, where to put it temporarily . Nothing prevents you from cleaning the bird cage periodically with a cloth damped with gas without washing it with soap .

Pet Parrot Care

Bird toy supplies offers a wide variety of supplies for all types of birds, to give your pet bird a more comfortable environment.

Whether you have talking parrots like African Greys and Cockatoos, or Pet Parrot Careother breeds like Macaws, Amazons, etc, spend some quality leisure time together with them. Parrots are like humans too. They need to have fun, and you can do this both inside and outside the house. Here are some ideas you can use.

The bath tub or kitchen sink is a great place for you and your parrot to have fun. Parrots love to splash around in the water, just like children. Use a squirt bottle to create mist like at a waterfall, or use a small ball for the parrot to push around in the water.

Just like us humans getting bored in the house, parrots get bored too living in their cage. Do some re-arranging of the cage by replacing some of the toys. If you have different toys, rotate them weekly, or visit the pet shop and see what new toys the shop has to offer. Or you can make your own toys, using bits and pieces of the old toys that are damaged or broken.

Take your parrot out for a drive to the park. The park is a great place to spend time with your bird. I used to hang the bird cage on a low tree branch facing a children’s playground and my parrot seemed to love it. The beach is also a wonderful place to take your parrot to and it certainly will attract a lot of attention from beach goers. Or you can attend a parrot owners club gathering if there is one in your area. Having many parrots at one place is a great social event for your parrot.

Share a meal with your parrot. Prepare some fresh vegetables or fruits and eat together from the plate. If you find that icky or unhygienic, just pretend to eat, while you use your hand to put the food back onto the plate discreetly.

Parrots live for a very long time, some even outlived their caregivers. So in essence, they are your lifelong companion whom you should be spending quality leisure time together with.
